Types of railing for Lahore homes
1. Frameless glass railing
Clear toughened glass panels fixed in a floor U-channel or with stainless steel spigots, usually with a slim steel or wood top rail. It gives an open, modern look and lets daylight reach the stairwell — the most requested design in new DHA and Bahria Town houses.
2. Glass railing with steel posts
Glass panels held between stainless steel posts with clamps. It is easier to install on existing stairs, works well on curved or turning flights, and usually costs less than full frameless systems.
3. Stainless steel (SS) railing
Round or square SS pipes with horizontal rods, vertical balusters or cable infill. Low maintenance and rust-resistant. SS 304 suits indoor stairs; SS 316 is better for open terraces and roof edges.
4. Mild steel (MS) powder-coated railing
Fabricated MS sections — flat bar, square pipe or laser-cut panels — powder-coated in black, grey, bronze or any shade. Ideal when you want a bold design, privacy panels or a match with the main gate and window grills.
5. Wrought iron style and wooden handrail
Traditional scrolls and patterns with a sheesham, ash or teak handrail — still popular in classic and Spanish-style elevations. We can combine MS balusters with a solid wood rail for a warm finish.
Choosing the right railing
| Your priority | Recommended option |
|---|---|
| Modern, open look | Frameless glass with spigots or U-channel |
| Lowest maintenance | SS 304 indoors, SS 316 outdoors |
| Children at home | Glass panels or close vertical bars — no horizontal "ladder" rods |
| Exposed terrace / rooftop | SS 316 or powder-coated MS with laminated glass |
| Matching gate and grills | MS powder-coated in the same colour |
| Classic interior | Wrought iron style with wooden handrail |
Safety standards every railing should meet
- Height: at least about 3 ft (900 mm) on stairs and about 3.5 ft (1,050 mm) on balconies, terraces and voids — higher for very tall drops.
- Gaps: openings small enough that a child's head cannot pass through (around 4 inches / 100 mm).
- Glass: toughened safety glass only, with polished edges; laminated toughened for high voids.
- Fixing: anchors into concrete slab or beam — never only into marble, tile or plaster.
- Handrail: continuous and comfortable to grip along the whole flight.
A railing that wobbles or is fixed only to the tile edge is a safety risk, however good it looks.
What a proper railing quotation should include
| Item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Running feet per floor / area | The real quantity — not a guessed lump sum |
| Glass thickness & type | 10 mm vs 12 mm, toughened vs laminated |
| Steel grade | SS 304 or SS 316, pipe size and wall thickness |
| Fixing system | Spigots, U-channel, standoffs or welded base plates |
| Handrail | SS, wood species or glass cap |
| Finish | Mirror / satin polish, powder-coat colour |
| Making good | Repair of marble, tile or paint after fixing |
| Timeline | Glass tempering lead time included |
Our process
- Photos and plan — send pictures of the stairs, balcony or terrace and your design idea.
- Site measurement — exact levels, turns, landings and slab edges.
- Design and samples — glass type, steel finish, handrail and fixing options.
- Written BOQ — itemised scope and timeline before work begins.
- Fabrication — steel work in the workshop; glass cut and tempered to size.
- Installation — anchoring, alignment, sealing and polish.
- Handover — wobble test, cleaning and care instructions.
New construction or renovation
In a new house, the railing should be planned with the stair finish so anchors and channels go in before marble polish. In an existing house, we remove the old railing, repair the edge, and fit the new design with dust protection. If you are building from the ground up, see our construction company in Lahore page; for upgrades, see the home renovation guide.
Care and maintenance
- Clean glass with a soft cloth and mild glass cleaner — avoid abrasive pads.
- Wipe stainless steel along the grain; rinse terrace railing after dust storms.
- Check spigot and post bolts once a year.
- Touch up powder-coated MS if it is scratched to prevent rust.
Client checklist
- Measure or photograph every flight, landing and balcony.
- Decide indoor vs outdoor grade (SS 304 or SS 316).
- Ask for glass thickness and toughened certificate in writing.
- Confirm anchoring into concrete, not only into tiles.
- Agree the timeline including glass tempering.
